		<description>I think Twitter has phase-shifts that are dependent primarily on the number of people you follow, and those who follow you to lesser degree. 

My approach to combat the irrelevancy and actually keep Twitter as a useful tool has been to be very selective of those I follow. I have several close friends that I &lt;i&gt;do not&lt;/i&gt; follow for one reason or another. Probably because they do a lot of what you outlined before. I like to keep my list of &quot;following&quot; to a hundred, but it&#039;s been creeping up lately.

I use Twitterific, so any replies come right to me. I also track my name and a few other topics straight to my phone, so I&#039;m not missing out on conversations that I want to be a part of. I just cut down the noise level.
